José Moura

José Moura is a native of Rio de Janeiro and has been painting part time for over 20 years. He paints because he loves to, and over the years has painted over 400 canvases in oils or acrylics, most of which he has sold. José describes his style as surrealist; his paintings are scenic, usually figurative, with vibrant colour.

Mostly he paints scenes of life in Rio de Janeiro but is best known for his series ‘Mulheres negras’. He depicts the hardship of the women in the arid environment of the shantytowns. The chores are unending, there is no escape but the women retain their good humour and dignity.
